SENSE - Sustainability Evaluation of Solar Energy Systems
| Category: |
Energy |
| Client: |
EC (European Commission) |
| Duration: |
2003 - 2005 (completed) |
| Objective: |
The today's main challenges for the solar industry are the need to reduce prices for solar systems, the foreseeable scarceness of raw materials and the necessary improvement of the energy pay back time. The unsolved recycling issues will become a problem in the near future. The project SENSE will face these challenges by developing recycling strategies for a-Si, CIS and CdTe solar cells and by scientifically based analysis of the efficiency of the solar systems, based on Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). This has to consider production, use and End of Life (EoL) aspects of the complete systems to be holistic. As recycling is a possibility to save energy for the primary production of new materials, it also will affect the energy payback time positively, beneath the reduction of the material scarceness and the reduction of material costs. |

Stiftung Initiative Mehrweg (SIM) |
| Duration: |
2005 - 2007 (completed) |
| Objective: |
Goal of the study is an analysis of the environmental impacts of the production, utilisation and "end of life" of three packaging systems (wooden boxes, cardboard boxes and plastic crates). This includes the individual distribution systems like one-way or multi-way for the transport of fruit and vegetables in Europe. Additionally to the environmental impacts, which are the core of this life-cycle assessment, the study will also integrate cost factors over the entire life cycle and considers social characteristics of the examined products and process chains. The environmental part is based on the ISO 14040 ff. and framed by cost and social factors to enable conclusions leading towards a higher sustainability of the fruit and vegetable packaging and transportation system.
Sensitivity analyses are conducted and different scenarios are assessed in order to quantify the influence of different parameter settings (e.g. production efficiencies, lifetime, recycling shares etc.) throughout the life-cycle of fruit and vegetable packaging with the most common solutions in Europe. |

ZeroWIN - Towards Zero Waste in Industrial Networks
| Category: |
Electronics, Energy, Construction Materials and Buildings |
| Client: |
EC (European Commission) |
| Duration: |
2009 - 2014 (completed) |
| Objective: |
The ZeroWIN-project will examine and develop new and innovative approaches and effective strategies for the prevention of waste in industries based on industrial symbiosis. Industrial Symbiosis is concerned with regional collaboration of companies from traditionally separated sectors which exchange by-products, energy, water and materials in such way, that the waste from one industry becomes raw material for another.
Goal:
To find new and innovative approaches and effective strategies for the prevention of waste in industries based on industrial symbiosis
1. The development of innovative technologies, waste-prevention methodologies, strategies and system tools (e.g. eco-design, local industrial clusters, and resource exchange) exportable into other European and worldwide contexts shall represent the main focus of this action.
2. The goal is to develop a structured and innovative production model for resource-use optimisation and waste prevention, also taking residues as secondary raw materials, and test it in real cases of sustainable industrial networks.
Results should translate the vision of a sustainable development into elements of a sustainable entrepreneurship, focusing at enhancing business opportunities according to a "towards zero waste" approach.
Expected Results:
- a decrease of at least 30% of greenhouse gases emissions,
- at least 70% of overall re-use and recycling of waste,
- a reduction of at least 75% of fresh water utilisation.
